CREATIVEPRO.COM'S Ben Long has written an enthusiastic first look at a beta of Nikon Capture NX. Long says that Capture NX's editing features are strong enough that users of non-Nikon cameras may buy the program to work on their TIFF and JPEG files.

CNET: Microsoft announces JPEG rival

CNET reports that Microsoft has announced a new still photo file format, called Windows Media Photo, which the company says is superior to JPEG, offering better image quality at significantly higher compression ratios.

Reuters: Canon considers halting new film camera development

In an odd, heavily corrected story, Reuters has reported today that Canon has announced that it is considering halting the development of new film cameras. Existing film camera models will continue to be produced and sold as Canon monitors market demand and evaluates the future of its film camera business.

Sinar Bron, the U.S. distributor of Sinar products, has announced the Sinarback eMotion75, a 33-megapixel medium format digital back designed for either untethered or tethered operation. This suggests that the eMotion75, which was announced first by Sinar Switzerland this past February, will soon become available in the U.S.

Chicago Tribune posts fun White House photo op slideshow

Pete Souza, a Chicago Tribune staff photographer, produced an amusing audio slideshow of an official White House photo opportunity with President Bush and Australia's prime minister, John Howard. The show, which runs in real time from the moment the photographers are ushered into the Oval Office until they are hustled out, takes 30 seconds.

Raw Developer 1.5 released

Iridient Digital has released v1.5 of Raw Developer, the company's Mac-only RAW conversion application. This update makes Raw Developer a universal binary application, improves the RAW demosaicing algorithm, offers improved sharpening and several new advanced color and luminance controls, and adds support for a handful of medium format digital backs/cameras, among other improvements.
